Turmoil in the Coffee Market
You may have heard that coffee prices are on the way up. What does this mean Birds and Beans Bird Friendly coffee?
To ensure the availability of our Bird Friendly coffees, we contract our coffees in advance. Â Coffee contracts are based on the C-price (commodity price) of coffee in US dollars. Â Our contracts include premiums for quality, shipping and storage, as well as certifications: Fair Trade, Organic and Bird Friendly.Â
Over the past year, coffee yields are low due to the effects of drought, the timing of rainfall and the intensity of storms… all due to climate instability.Â
Simultaneously, the demand for coffee is also increasing in all markets.Â
Speculators are taking advantage of this squeeze and have bid up the C price even higher than it would otherwise be. Â This year, the c-price swung from a low near $2 (barely sustainable specialty coffee growers) to a 50 year high. Â
We Canadians have a lot to deal With right Now. Let's not forget to smell the coffee!
Coffee roasters are now locking in contracts at these high prices. Â Hence it hitting the news: roasted coffee prices will rise dramatically across the board in the coming weeks and months. The only question is how much and for how long? Â All the pressures indicate that prices are likely to remain high rather than fall. Â For a good review of the C-price see this article.Â
Â
Through this we will remain committed providing you the best possible prices. Â We will increase and decrease our prices to you as our costs lock in. Â Through the turbulence, we need to support the farmers who produce the highest quality Organic and Bird Friendly coffee. Their efforts preserve indispensable winter habitat for our migratory birds. Â It has never been more important to protect the nature we love and we can do it just by drinking a delicious cup of our Bird Friendly coffee.
